The Artists of Califas: A Special Presentation and Performance
Wednesday, September 19 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm
Presented in conjunction with the Richmond Art Center’s Fall exhibition Califas: Art of the US-Mexico Borderlands/El Arte de la Zona Fronteriza México-Estados Unidos, five Bay Area artists whose work reflects a wide range of interpretations of the border will give a special presentation and performance on Wednesday, September 19 at 6:30pm. This event is free and open to the public.
Ronald Rael will host the evening’s event. Rael is the co-curator of Califas, and an artist, professor and the author of Borderwall as Architecture: A Manifesto for the U.S. Mexico Boundary. Appearing with Rael will be Ana Teresa Fernández, Mexican-born painter and performance artist, who will speak on looking behind the wall; and Rebeca Garcia-González, painter, teacher, and musician, who will share some of her life’s journey from Puerto Rico to becoming a portrait painter of Richmond residents.
The program includes a musical/sonic performance by Guillermo Galindo, experimental composer, artist and co-author (with Richard Misrach) of Border Cantos. Galindo will perform in concert with Cristóbal Martínez, an artist, scholar and member of the Postcommodity artist collective.
