This exhibition will feature contemporary art by Californian graphic artists and illustrators who express vital messages and explore the concerns of our time. The exhibition is juried by Marvella Muro, Director of Artistic Programs and Education at Self Help Graphics and Art in Los Angeles.

Call for Entry: Artists who live in California are invited to enter. The juror is interested in work by artists who creatively express timely messages and use unique approaches to explore shared issues relevant to local and global communities. Works may include printmaking, comic and sequential art, digital art, and illustration. Artists may submit up to three works and all entries will be juried online. Selected works will be presented in the Community Gallery at the Richmond Art Center in Fall 2019. The deadline to enter is Thursday, August 8, 2019.

About the Juror: Marvella Muro is the Director of Artistic Programs and Education at Self Help Graphics and Art in Los Angeles where she oversees programming, including the Professional Printmaking Program, Exhibition Print Program, Artists in Residence, youth programming, public programming, exhibitions and partnerships. Prior to joining SHG, she was the Community Engagement Manager at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) (2016-2018), developing and executing art programs with community partners, artists, and social service groups in the neighborhoods of East Los Angeles, Compton and North Hollywood. From 2012-2015 she worked at USC Pacific Asia Museum where she co-developed public programs and oversaw the day-to-day logistics of the museum. In 2012, she oversaw the installation of the exhibition, In Wonderland: Surrealist Adventures of Women Artists in Mexico and the United States at LACMA and developed its programming. She has a B.A. in Art History from Cal State University, Fullerton and earned her M.A. in Arts Management from Goucher College.

HOW DO I APPLY?

Eligibility:

  • Participation is open to all artists who reside/work in California

Artwork Requirements:

  • Media: Graphic Art and Illustration
  • Artwork size: Artwork size may not exceed 68 inches in height
  • Installation ready: Selected artwork must be ready to hang with any appropriate hardware – hanging wire, saw tooth hook, d-ring, etc. Work on paper must be framed or mounted.
  • New and original work: Artwork submissions must be original work created since 2016 that have not previously been exhibited at the Richmond Art Center

Prepare Your Submission:

  • # of Artworks: Artists may submit up to three artworks (one image per artwork) per entry.
  • Artwork information: Include caption information for each artwork submission (title, year, media, dimensions, price/value)
  • Digital Images: Image files should be jpgs with a maximum width of 1200px and 1 MB file size. File naming convention: Lastname_FirstInitial_NumberOfImage.jpg (example: smith_r_1.jpg)

Entry FeePayment can be made online, over the phone or in person at the Richmond Art Center

  • Non-Members: $40 nonrefundable fee per entry entitles the submission of up to three artworks (one image per artwork).
  • For RAC Members: $35 nonrefundable entry fee. Membership must be valid through end of exhibition Friday, November 22, 2019.

 

TERMS

  • Fees: Entry fees are non-refundable
  • Selection: Entry does not guarantee selection for the exhibition
  • Selection: Unfortunately the juror cannot provide individual feedback on their jurying decisions
  • Artwork: Selected artwork not accurately represented by the digital file and artwork caption information may be declined at the discretion of the Juror and Richmond Art Center
  • Delivery: Selected artwork must be delivered to the Richmond Art Center during scheduled drop off dates:
    • Artwork Hand Delivery Days/Time: Friday, August 23, 11am-4pm and Saturday, August 24, 11am-4pm
    • Artwork Shipped Delivery Days: Artworks shipped should arrive at the Richmond Art Center between Monday, August 19 and Thursday, August 22, 2019. Shipped artwork needs to be delivered with a postage paid return address label. Work must be shipped in sturdy, reusable cardboard containers. DO NOT use loose styrofoam “peanut” packing
  • Insurance: The Richmond Art Center shall insure selected artwork for duration of exhibition
  • Images: Artists agree to allow the Richmond Art Center to use images of entered artworks for publicity and education purposes
  • Sales: For any artwork sales: artist receives 60% of the sale price; Richmond Art Center retains 40% (RAC Members at the Partner level and above receive 70% commission for artwork sales)
  • Pick Up: All unsold artworks must be picked up on the scheduled days: Saturday, November 23, 11am-4pm and Monday, November 25, 11am-4pm
