Work: Art Jewelry and Kinetic Sculptures

For over 30 years I’ve made one-of-a-kind earrings, necklaces, pendants and cufflinks. Working primarily with anodized aluminum, I build jewelry in bright and light designs in beautiful colors.

The kinetic art are large mobile style sculptures in metals, on steel wire, covered with acrylic paint. These are 2′ x 3′ and larger. Themes are flowers, leaves, and mid century modern designs. This art form has given me a new expression, a view on freedom of movement. It has been an interesting year, making art now in this pandemic, the cultural explosion, continually revealed inequities. I can make relevant art that still speaks to my culture, my love of color and form, and the temperament of the world at this time. My art in motion is fun, a kinetic dance of color, wire andair.

I’m inspired by ancient designs, but in a modern mood with bright colors and intriguing imagery. I work in mixed media, prevalently anodized aluminum, using color as a design motif and adding glass, stones, hardware store jewels, polymer clay and wire. Each piece is hand crafted and unique.

I’ve created and sold earrings, bracelets, pendants, necklaces and cufflinks in contemporary crafts galleries, museum gift shops, and stores throughout the U.S. and special projects with The Kennedy Center for Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. My kinetic sculptures are in homes and offices across the country, collaborating with clients to make the metal designs more personal. A current project is an Art Donation Series to share proceeds from sales with some of my favorite places: Petaluma Arts Center, Art Escape Sonoma, Marin Theatre Company, Redwood Empire Food Bank, SF Jazz Center and Museum of African Diaspora in San Francisco.

About: Denise Ward has taught jewelry design and art classes, at Spring Hill Montessori School and Cinnabar Elementary School, Art Escape in Sonoma, Petaluma Arts Center and Santa Rosa Junior College and Napa Valley College.
