Richmond Art Center Announces Executive Director Search

Richmond, CA:

Richmond Art Center has announced the launch of a national search for its next Executive Director. The search will be led by an Executive Director Search Committee composed of members of the Board of Directors, staff, and representatives from the community.

The full job description and application portal are available at: richmondartcenter.org/executivedirector

Board President Nettie Hoge shared, “We are seeking an inspiring leader to guide Richmond Art Center as we build on 90 years of service to our community and look ahead to our centennial.”

Jeff Nathanson has served as Interim Executive Director since September 2025, when he stepped in for José Rivera, who is on long-term medical leave. Launching the search enables Richmond Art Center to plan for long-term leadership while continuing to support Mr. Rivera’s health and recovery.

Applications are due March 30, 2026. The Board of Directors expects to appoint a new Executive Director by summer 2026. Mr. Nathanson will support the transition and onboarding of the incoming Executive Director.

About Richmond Art Center: Founded in 1936 by artist Hazel Salmi through the WPA’s Emergency Education Program, Richmond Art Center has served as a creative hub for the Richmond community for 90 years. In response to Richmond’s rapid growth during World War II, Salmi and local advocates successfully petitioned the City to include an art center in the Civic Center development. RAC’s 25,000 square foot purpose-built facility opened in 1951 and today includes a 2,200-square-foot main gallery and seven studio classrooms.

Richmond Art Center currently operates with a staff of 10 and approximately 60 teaching artists each year, guided by a 12-member Board of Directors. Through studio classes, exhibitions, and community programs at its Civic Center campus and partner sites (including free, high-quality arts experiences for WCCUSD schools) Richmond Art Center continues its long-standing mission: to be a catalyst in Richmond for learning and living through art.
