Announcing the retirement of our Executive Director

After six years of leadership, Richmond Art Center’s Executive Director, José Rivera, has retired (May 2026).

José joined during the pandemic shutdown in summer 2020 and guided the organization through COVID-19 and its reopening in fall 2021. He brought steady leadership and a commitment to staff and community, prioritizing strong partnerships and community-responsive programming.

José has decided to retire to pursue nonprofit consulting. Richmond Art Center’s board, staff, and faculty thank him for six years of dedicated service and wish him the very best in his future endeavors.

Jeff Nathanson will continue serving as Interim Executive Director while the search for a new Executive Director continues. An update will be shared later this summer.

Lastly, I would like to take a moment to share that, after six years of leadership, José Rivera has officially retired as Executive Director of Richmond Art Center (May 2026). We are deeply grateful for his service and wish him the very best as he moves into nonprofit consulting. Our search for a new Executive Director is underway, and we will share updates in the near future.
