A Message from our Interim Executive Director and Board President
Dear Friends,
The story of how Hazel Salmi founded the Richmond Art Center (RAC) in 1936 is one of creativity, tenacity, and vision. Since then, hundreds more stories have unfolded at RAC: a historically significant art center that has provided arts education, served as a vital community hub, and launched countless artistic careers.
As we approach the end of 2025, we recognize the challenges and uncertainties of our time. One might ask: What is the importance of art when there are so many pressing issues? For nearly nine decades, RAC has provided arts learning for students of all ages that make space for creative exploration to help people process and navigate life’s challenges. Our exhibitions engage the community we serve, featuring work by student, youth, emerging, and professional artists (a highlight this year was the John Wehrle retrospective). These programs drew thousands of visitors from across the Bay Area and earned RAC the East Bay Express “Best Art Gallery” award, a testament to the impact of our work.
All of this affirms what we have always known to be true: art matters!
Looking ahead to 2026 and our 90th anniversary, we’re excited to celebrate RAC’s colorful history and bold vision. While 2025 has been a year of transition, with Executive Director José Rivera on medical leave, RAC’s staff and board have worked heroically to ensure the organization’s operations and programs continue successfully.
Please support RAC with a generous, tax-deductible year-end gift. Your gift will help us reach our $90,000 goal and enter our 90th anniversary year with a strong foundation, ensuring RAC continues as the East Bay’s premier art center.
We are deeply grateful for your support!
With best regards,
Nettie Hoge
