Holiday Art Making

Teaching artist Tatiana Ortiz shows us how to make some cute holiday art projects!

Evergreen Macramé (starts 0:27)
Materials Needed: Wooden bead, any color yarn/string, scissors, piece of paper, pencil

Snowman Jar (starts 3:39)
Materials Needed: any size jar, paint (white, red, black, orange), paint brushes, scrap paper, optional- candy!

Holiday Pop-Up Card (starts 5:12)
Materials Needed: colored construction paper, glue, scissors, crayons or markers

Papel Picado and a Marigold Watercolor for Día de los Muertos

PAPEL PICADO

Supplies needed: Tissue paper, scissors, string, tape (optional)

MARIGOLD WATERCOLOR

Supplies needed: Watercolor paint, cup of water, water color paper, oil pastel, pencil

Taking Care of Yourself / Cuidando de ti mismo

Name five things you do to take care of yourself! This can include anything you do for your mental, physical or spiritual health. For example, running, watching your favorite movies with your family, praying, or dancing.

MLK Jr Coloring Sheet

Enjoy this coloring sheet created by Richmond artist Tiffany Conway to honor the life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr.

Tiffany says, “I’m deeply inspired by the legacy of our ancestors in particular, Martin Luther King. He has left a wealth of wisdom and guidance for us to utilize in times of despair. I am thrilled to honor his legacy.”

Art Cube Game

It’s time for the Art Cube Game!

You will need:

  • Scissors
  • Pens/crayons/markers
  • Paper
  • Tape
  • A place to play

Instructions:

  1. Draw a pattern or shape on each side of the cube (download and print the linked pdf below or create your own).
  2. Cut the cube out.
  3. Tape cube together.
  4. Now it’s time to play! Roll the cube and on a piece of paper draw the shape or pattern that lands facing up.

Draw on your own or with other people. Keep rolling and keep drawing! Try different colors. Think about the placement of your drawings on the page. This is called composition. Have fun!!
