Call for Exhibition Proposals 2019

Deadline to Enter: Thursday, January 10, 2019, midnight

Exhibition Dates: April 30 – May 24, 2019

The Richmond Art Center is now accepting Exhibition Propositions! Artists, curators and collaborative groups are invited to submit exhibition proposals that introduce new artists, artwork and perspectives on art. The selected applicant will receive a $500 stipend for a pop-up exhibition in the West Gallery in fall 2019.

Guidelines

  • No fee to enter!
  • Proposals may be solo or group exhibitions
  • Proposals for any artwork media accepted
  • Proposals from applicants of all ages and levels of experience are welcome
  • Proposals should include new artwork that has not previously been exhibited at the Richmond Art Center
  • Artists/curators are responsible for the delivery and pick up of their artworks
  • Selected exhibition will be presented in the West Gallery:

    • Notes on the West Gallery:
      • Approx. 1,250 square feet (great for sculpture)
      • 36 running feet of hangable wall space (plywood walls)
      • The gallery is a through space so egress is an important consideration
      • The gallery has a lot of direct natural light and is great for sculpture (the entire right wall is windows)
      • Windows have UV filtering glass and discreet blinds
  • The Richmond Art Center will contribute institutional support in the form of:
      • The opportunity to work closely with the Richmond Art Center to turn an idea into an exhibition
      • $500 exhibition stipend
      • Space for an exhibition
      • Fine art insurance for artwork while on RAC’s premises
      • Equipment, as needed as available (pedestals, vitrines, etc.)
      • Installation and deinstallation support, as needed as available
      • Exhibition labels and vinyl signage
      • Preparation and design of promotional materials (press release and postcard)
      • Promotion of exhibition on RAC’s website and social media platforms
      • Support for the presentation of a public program (publicity, set up, mic, etc.)
  • Eligibility:
    • Participation is open to all artists and curators who reside in California

Review and Selection Process

  • Submissions are reviewed by members of a selection panel to determine semi-finalists
  • Finalists are invited to participate in ‘Proposition Pitch’ interviews with a panel of Bay Area curators and arts professionals. Twenty-minute ‘Proposition Pitch’ interviews will be scheduled on Saturday, January 26, 2019, 11:00 am-1:00 pm. The Review Panel will offer feedback on proposals and ultimately select a final exhibition proposition.

  • Artwork Pick Up/Deinstall: Saturday, May 25, 2019, 11:00 am-4:00 pm (Memorial Day Weekend)

Review Criteria

  • Artistic Excellence
    • What is the significance of the exhibition, the artist/s, and the works of art?
  • Relevance
    • Does the exhibition have the potential to engage and inspire audiences? Who?
    • Why this exhibition in Richmond? Why now?
  • Feasibility
    • Are logistics for the exhibition realistic?

TERMS

  • Selection: Entry does not guarantee selection for an exhibition at the Richmond Art Center
  • Artwork Drop Off and Installation: All artwork must be delivered to and installed at the Richmond Art Center during scheduled installation dates: Wednesday, April 24 – Saturday, April 27, 2019
  • Insurance: The Richmond Art Center shall insure selected artwork for duration of exhibition
  • Images: Artists agree to allow the Richmond Art Center to use images of selected artworks for publicity and educational purposes
  • Sales: Artwork in the final exhibition may be listed for sale. For artwork sales that occur as a result of the exhibition: artist receives 60% of the sale price; Richmond Art Center retains 40% (unless the artist is a Partner Level RAC member, in this case the commission they receive is 70%)
  • Artwork Pick Up: All unsold artworks must be picked up on the scheduled day: Saturday, May 25, 2019, 11:00 am – 4:00 pm
