Juror’s Statement:
I am impressed by the wide range of artistic ideas expressed in the ceramics submitted to Richmond Art Center’s Spotlight on the Ceramics Studio.
Particularly notable are the combined media pieces by Jason Henry and Diana Lawrence, thought-provoking sculptures that earn Artistic Merit Awards. Well done to these artists.
Figurative works by Cherrie Ninnis and Alex Martinez explore different aspects of the human condition, expressing whimsical, playful, and introspective emotions. Martinez’s piece stands out for its exceptional glaze work.
Holly King’s necklace, Aloha Dreams, recalls a Hawaiian lei. Immaculately crafted, it transforms clay shapes into a delicate and compelling artistic statement.
Other highlights include Colleen Ngo’s Trompe L’oeil cardboard box, demonstrating keen observational skill, and Stella Breslin’s double-chamber stoneware vessel, inspired by ancient pre-Columbian culture, which is beautifully executed.
Congratulations to all the artists who submitted work to the exhibition. Embrace the joy of making ceramics!
