Weaving Between the Lines explores the dynamic relationship between tradition and innovation in contemporary weaving. This collaborative exhibition between the Golden Gate Weavers Guild and the Bay Area Basket Makers Guild brings together more than thirty artists who draw on time-honored techniques while expanding the possibilities of weaving.
Celebrating 88 years, the Golden Gate Weavers Guild is the oldest weaving guild in Northern California. Its members build on decades of shared knowledge, carrying forward historic practices while continually testing their limits, reimagining pattern, material, scale, and form. Co-curator and weaver Lonnie Lee observes, “Weaving is an ancient practice with infinite possibilities.”
Founded in 1984, the Bay Area Basket Makers Guild embraces an equally expansive approach. The guild welcomes both technically rigorous, tightly structured baskets and looser, more intuitive explorations of material and form. Co-curator and basket maker Bob Darchi notes, “Several of our artists specialize in work that a viewer might wonder why they are even considered baskets.”
A special event, Unraveling the Lines: An Artist-Led Conversation and Exhibition Walkthrough, will take place Saturday, April 25 at 11am. Together, the event and exhibition celebrate the dialogue between the two guilds, highlighting weaving as a living Bay Area practice that is rooted in history, yet radically open to reinvention.
