Art of the African Diaspora, in partnership with Richmond Art Center, supports artists of African descent in the Bay Area through representation, professional development, and building a creative community.
In 2021 Art of the African Diaspora will be hosted at aotad.org and richmondartcenter.org. All artists who register to participate will be included in the online exhibition with an individual webpage highlighting their work. Artists can also host virtual or in person* open studios, artists talks and other events in conjunction with Art of the African Diaspora.
“Art of the African Diaspora is an exhibition that introduces African Diaspora art to new audiences, but also provides fresh insight into its artists and their Bay Area experiences. We are excited that the 2021 program will be a virtual hybrid which we anticipate will expand our audience,” says Stephen Bruce, artist and Steering Committee Chair, AOTAD. “Each artist reveals a special story and offers a unique view into the world they live and social connections that drive their creativity.”

About: A little about myself. I use bleach as my medium for fine art and items that are drawn from that creation include, greeting cards, tee shirts, and a newly released art book.
I was born in Little Rock Arkansas in 1940. Three years later during the Second World War, the family moved to Seattle where my father found defense work at Boeing. My career has given me a lot of interesting things to do, including a call to Hollywood, short-lived, however, and then becoming a board member of the Artship, a renovated ship of war that became a seaborne arts venue in Oakland, during which time I took care of much of the electrical work aboard the ship, even getting my name in the credits of two indie film made aboard-ship and some minor voice-overs. The ArtShip was forced to terminate in 2004. My first internet sale in 1997 was to a person of Zulu heritage from South Africa and one of the most recent to a Swedish representative of the Carnaval, a huge and sprawling global celebration that deals intensively with the peoples of the African Diaspora. For the 2003 Carnaval in San Francisco my bleach rendering of ‘Califia, Queen of California’ was chosen as the poster cover for that event. I have since been shown and honored in various schools and colleges such as Stanford, UCLA, Sonoma State, and Santa Rosa JC and a much longer and growing list. The introduction of bleach into my art has been a huge catalyst and in it, I find enough nuances to explore to take me the rest of the way. Until recently I was a member of the board of directors for Prescott-Joseph, a non-profit located here in Oakland.
Notes:
I currently have work that has been shown or sold in 15 plus countries, volume-wise, not as much as I would like but enough to tickle my ego. Even at my advanced age I still have a high level of energy and intend to play with the bleach into a far distant future. At least, I will give it a very good try.

Now it’s time to play! Roll the cube and on a piece of paper draw the shape or pattern that lands facing up.
Draw on your own or with other people. Keep rolling and keep drawing! Try different colors. Think about the placement of your drawings on the page. This is called composition. Have fun!!

Arts and Crafts Hub Spotlight On: Yelloh Joy Magazine
Yelloh Joy Magazine was created by San Pablo-based writer and editor L Holley. Published four times a year, the magazine provides a digital and literary platform for women of color creatives. Holley writes, “The artistic flow of designers, writers, music-makers, entrepreneurs and innovators are the DNA of what makes our work so great.” See sample copies of the magazine online here.

Your safety is really important to us. In light of the rapid increase of Covid-19 cases in Richmond, we have decided to cancel the in-person Ceramics Sale and Curbside Vendor Market for our Holiday Arts Festival at Richmond Art Center.
We’re continuing to assess the rate of new Covid-19 cases and hope to reschedule our Vendor Market sometime in Spring 2021. If you were planning to pick up your Thank You Gifts at the market we will be in touch with you soon.
We are deeply sorry for this inconvenience, but feel it’s necessary for the health of our staff, vendors, and community.
