Learn how to reinterpret material, process and content inspired by Japanese folk textile “boro,” a castaway rag, and make work which speaks from your own place. Sashiko stitching, shibori, the use of indigo and other transformative techniques will be examples of an alternative creative process where darning = healing, meditative action = marking time and reuse/repair = recording history. Summer Class Registration opens Tuesday, April 28. Expand and advance your skills with more than 60 courses to choose from in ceramics, screenprinting, metals, painting, drawing and more. Workshop – Boxing Our Memories

Bring a box, old purse, old tool kit or lunch box. Then bring all the bits and pieces you’ve been collecting and holding onto for memories: photos, flowers, letters, toys, broken strings of beads. We will glue and tape and paint and bind these into a collage of personal memory and history. This workshop is inspired by the exhibition “Mildred Howard: Spirit and Matter.”

This synthetic medium is the glue that pulls many media into a cohesive whole, including collage, oils, graphite, ink, soft and oil pastels and watercolor. Learn a new approach to forming metal. Fold forming is a method of manipulating metal that takes advantage of inherent metal characteristics. Work with the metal instead of imposing your will on it.
